Not "cleverly invented stories..."

I started reading 2 Peter today. I posted a couple days ago while still in 1 Peter that it truly amazes me that Peter, the author, actually walked and talked with Jesus!! Unlike Paul, and possibly Luke, Peter was an actual witness to Jesus' entire ministry!

In 2 Peter 1:16-18 he writes, "We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain."

You and I know that an eyewitness is the best person to talk to when we want to know about an event that we ourselves weren't present for. Police detectives look for people who witnessed crimes. Lawyers seek out credible witnesses to help win cases. An eyewitness--someone who saw it with their own eyes--is the only person who can give us details about things we didn't see ourselves.

Peter is our eyewitness. He saw Jesus perform miracle after miracle. He experienced walking on water, albeit briefly. He heard God the Father speak from heaven. He watched Jesus die a brutal death on the cross. And he saw the Risen Lord Jesus with his own eyes.

As Peter says, he's not passing along "cleverly invented stories" or fairytales. His words about Jesus are not old wives tales being passed along until the original story is completely distorted. He's telling us what he saw! He knows all about the power of Jesus because he witnessed it!

A reliable eyewitness?

Priceless!
